Lectures from different Sofia universities staged Monday on the square in front of the Bulgarian Parliament a silent "sitting" vigil against police brutality.
About 40 attended the so-called "Constitution Strike" on the idea of Literature Professor Alexander Kiossev against police using excessive force during students' and citizens' protests opposing the Socialist-endorsed government of Prime Minister, Plamen Oresharski, earlier this month.
The university teachers arrived on the square around 12 noon, each of them holding the Constitution of Bulgaria. They read their declaration, sent to media earlier, condemning police raids of autonomous schools and the more and more frequent cases of police obstructing access to campuses in downtown Sofia.
Police did not attempt to disperse them and diverted automobile traffic from the square.
A little later they moved to the adjacent park with the monument of the Sofia University Patron St Kliment Ohridski. They plan to read texts from the Constitution.
Another similar rally was staged at Sofia University.
The oldest and most prestigious high education institution in Bulgaria Sofia University St Kliment Ohridski, marks on November 25, 125 years since its establishment.
The official celebrations are led by the President of the school Prof Ivan Ilchev and come just days after its blockade by students protesting against the government was partially lifted.
Only the aula remained occupied, but it was freed by the students Monday in order to not obstruct the ceremony. Not even a single Bulgarian politician attended it.
Meanwhile, earlier on Monday the protesting students managed to cross the iron fences guarding the Parliament building from demonstrators and to enter the so-called security zone.
They displayed a large banner reading "The Fences Are in Your Minds; There Are No Boundaries for Our Spirit!"
The students explained this was a planned action on the occasion of the school's anniversary. Police again have not prevented it; just one policeman has attempted unsuccessfully to catch a male student while jumping over the fence.
