Winter Tourism: 1.8 Million Visit Bulgaria
Bulgaria has witnessed a bustling winter tourism season, with a total of 1.8 million tourists gracing its picturesque landscapes from December 1 to March 25
Hardly a day passes without a xenophobic incident occurring in Bulgaria.
Late on Tuesday, a man of Iraqi origin was assaulted in beaten in the capital Sofia, with eyewitnesses describing the assailants as “skinheads.”
The perpetrators of this and previous hate crimes in Sofia are yet to be arrested.
On Wednesday, a man was arrested for throwing a crate of eggs at Parliament.
The surge in xenophobic attacks has been largely fueled by ultranationalist outfits, most notably the Ataka (Attack) party – a key ally of the fragile government.
Ataka lawmakers have openly referred to immigrants and asylum-seekers as “cannibals” and “savages”, while insisting that the anti-graft protesters are “terrorists” and “paid by foreign forces." Rhetoric alarmingly similar to that of embattled dictators.
The Socialist-led government has vehemently denied being in an actual coalition with Ataka – but the latest string of events leaves one wondering if it is the extremist party that determines the agenda of the Bulgarian police.
