Hristo Biserov, Vice-Speaker of the Bulgarian Parliament, has resigned from the position of Deputy Chair of the liberal Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) party.

Biserov has also expressed his desire be released from his MP seat, meaning he will have to retire from the leadership of the house, too.

According to a media statement by DPS, Ahmed Dogan, Honorary Chair of the party, and Lyutvi Mestan, its current chair, have accepted Biserov's resignation from the post of Deputy Chair and agreed to terminate his participation in the formation's governing bodies.

According to DPS's press office, the motives behind the step are fully personal and not political and it is entirely up to Biserov whether to disclose them.

In order to be released from the his MP position, Biserov will have to file a request, which would then have to be voted by deputies.

The Movement is then likely to table another candidate for Vice-Speaker.

Traditionally, the Bulgarian Parliament has one vice-speaker from each parliamentary groups.

As opposition parties GERB and Ataka have decided to present no candidates this time over, the current Bulgarian Parliament has only two deputies, DPS's Biserov and the Bulgarian Socialist Party's Maya Manolova.

Hristo Biserov has been a long-time figure in the Movement's leadership, and has acted as MP from the party since 2005.

In the period 1991-2000, he was part of and MP for the rightist Union of Democratic Forces.

In 2000, he was among UDF politicians to request the resignation of then-leader and Bulgarian PM Ivan Kostov and was expelled from the party.
