Bulgarian Interior Minister Tsvetlin Yovchev has confirmed the government’s intention to build a partial fence on the border with Turkey.
The move will seek to curb the ongoing influx of Syrian refugees to the Balkan country.
“The construction of technical utilities that will protect the most vulnerable part of the Bulgarian-Turkish border is starting immediately,” Yovchev has said, according to the Bulgarian government’s press office.
He noted that Bulgaria’s border surveillance system is one of the most advanced in Europe and that all asylum seekers entering the country are being captured.
Yovchev said on Monday that the country had asked for an additional EUR 6 M in order to cope with the refugee influx.
Bulgaria has seen a considerable refugee influx over the past months, with authorities saying the number of asylum seekers in the country may reach 11 000 by the end of the year.
The Balkan country is the gateway to the European Union for refugees fleeing Syria via Turkey, many crossing the border illegally to seek asylum.
