A Syrian refugee, accommodated at the new temporary shelter in the southern Bulgarian town of Harmanli, has suffered a miscarriage, but is now feeling well thanks to doctors’ help.
The woman, whose identity was not disclosed, carried a foetus until the second month, but suddenly felt sick. After being rushed to the hospital, where doctors detected big complications in her pregnancy, she lost the baby.
The woman has been living with her two kids in a van at the shelter in Harmanli for three days.
The refugee shelter in Harmanli was opened last week because the capacity in all other shelters has been exceeded by 400 beds.
The refugees are accommodated in brand new trailers, with modern bathrooms, cold and hot water. The center also has an electric power generator. There is still no translator.
This is the first shelter of this type in Bulgaria. A total of 243 refugees, mostly Syrian nationals, are already housed there and more families with kids are expected this week.
The center was built on the territory of the former military barracks in the town. It is of the closed type (refugees are not be allowed to walk outside) for the time being and has 450 beds.
The opening of the center was preceded by protest rallies of local people who worry about safety and increased crime. The police have reassured them, pledging to maintain public order.
