Bulgaria: Bulgaria's Nationalist Leader - a True Gulliver

Bulgaria's opposition GERB party has got into the habit of calling votes of no-confidence against the Socialist-led government every other day. The move funnily turned nationalist MPs into avid travelers and their leader Volen Siderov – into a true Gulliver.

Right after the news breaks that a new motion is in the offing, the nationalists hit the road. The world is big and salvation lurks around the corner. It feels good to find a shoulder to cry on – in Brussels or in Hanoi.

On Tuesday it emerged that two days later, when Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski's government will face a second no-confidence vote, Siderov and his MPs will be in Vienna. The cabinet survived its first no-confidence vote on October 2, when all nationalist MPs were on a visit to Brussels. It is still not clear whom they conferred with there, but we know that they had a scuffle with the waiters at a local restaurant and tried to leave without paying.

The nationalists are a shame for Bulgaria, but nobody can hold them responsible. They are kingmakers and hold the fate of the government in their hands.

GERB is to table new motions. That means Bulgarians are in for more blushing.
