Good Grape Yield in Bulgaria Sees Prices Slump

The 2013 yield of grapes in Bulgaria is estimated to reach 30% above that for last year, informed grape producers.
For 2013, Bulgarian farmers are expected to gather some 250,000 tonnes of grapes, against 192,000 in 2012.
The quality of the yield is also superior, including that of grape types used for high quality wines.
However, wholesale prices have seen a slump, starting out at BGN 0.80 at the start of the grape picking season, and plumetting to some BGN 0.30 at the present moment.
Tuesday grape producers met Bulgarian Minister of Agriculture Dimitar Grekov in a discussion regarding the problems and prospects for the sector.
The problem of low wholesale prices has been chronically plaguing Bulgarian farmers, on many occasions have resorted to destroying their produce in protest.
At the meeting, grape producers requested from Minister Grekov higher supsidies for their sector.
