`We categorically condemn the blowing up of the St Atanasie Church at the monastery near Lesok in Tetovo region, Macedonia,` the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry spokesperson wrote in a statement received on Wednesday, 22 August.

`This act of vandalism aroused concern among the Bulgarian public. It is reminiscent of similar acts performed in Bosnia-Hercegovina and Kosovo, and condemned by the international community,` the statement reads.

`The outrage committed to this monument of spiritual value is directed against European and Christian civilization.`

The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry further described the act as a `challenge to the efforts of the political forces in Macedonia and of the international community to settle the crisis and to restore peace and confidence among the people there, and the age-long tradition of ethnic, cultural and religious coexistence of the two communities.`
