Bulgaria's Irina Bokova, who was just elected at first round UNESCO Director General for the second four-year term, says she attributes her victory to her homeland.

Speaking for the public radio (BNR) Saturday, Bokova stated her win was due to the tireless work of Bulgarian institutions, diplomacy, and president.

"My election was rather a confidence vote after I led UNESCO for four years," said she.

The vote of the 58-member Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was held Friday. Bokova was elected for a second term with absolute majority as she received 39 votes from the needed 30 to win the first round.

She told BNR the lobbying of the Bulgarian State has contributed a great deal for her securing the second term.

"I believe I would never have achieved such success simply on my own. This is a success for the entire Bulgarian diplomacy, the work of all embassies, the former government (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party, GERB - editor's note) and its foreign minister. My nomination for second term is part of the country's foreign policy. There are no personal successes in diplomacy; they are always successes of the State," Bokova stressed.
