The UN office in Sofia handed out Thursday awards for best essay and photo with subject Think Green. The ceremony was part of the celebrations that mark the tenth year since the establishment of the office of UNDP in Bulgaria. The awards were handed out by Minna Tyrkko, UNDP resident representative a.i., and Vesselin Dimitrov, dean of the Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communications. First prize went to Yanina Yaneva, second-year journalism major, for her essay "The Wealth of the Poor." Maria Makedonska, also second-year journalism major, got the encouragement award for her essay "Sofia. Generates Waste and Squanders." Svetlana Abadzhieva was awarded for her photo on the subject. The awarded articles and photo were published in Posoki, the quarterly newsletter of the UN in Bulgaria.

The Think Green contest was launched in early June 2002. The occasion was the International Year of Mountains and Ecotourism 2002 as dedicated by the UNEcotourism in Bulgaria, biodiversity, volunteering and the environment, urban pollution and waste collection were among the topics the participants chose to write about. Originality, good style, and analytical thinking were the main criteria applied to the participants. The students were assessed by members of the UNDP country office and professors from the journalism faculty.
