The car which rammed into the gates of the Turkish Embassy in Sofia at 1.30 pm on Thursday was driven by a 35-year-old Bulgarian national.

The man was taken to the 1st Regional Police Department in Sofia after the accident to be questioned.

He has a criminal record for inflicting bodily harm, according to dnevnik.bg.

The vehicle, a dark blue Audi A4 with a registration plate issued in the Black Sea city of Varna, is being inspected for explosives.

The car came from a cross street and ran into the building, according to reports of the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR).

Eyewitnesses of the accident told journalists of BNR that the driver had been shouting that he wanted to avenge his brother who had been murdered in Turkey.

According to the Sofia District Police Directorate, the man may have lost control of the vehicle.
