Legendary rock musician Roger Waters fired up the crowd at the Vasil Levski national stadium in the Bulgarian capital Sofia after his "Wall" displayed the shining caption "Resignation" in Bulgarian.
"Hello people. I am very happy to be here. First, I want to thank the children with the loudest applause and to bow to those who perished in their fight for freedom and truth; to one in particular - Jean Charles De Menezes," Waters said in Bulgarian.
The concert was dedicated to the true story of Brazilian De Menezes, a man shot by police in London over fears of terror attacks.
When Waters started singing "Mother" and "Mother, should I trust the government," the caption "Resignation" in Cyrillic in Bulgarian appeared on the left side of The Wall, while on the right, shiny letters displayed "Nо fucking way."
The huge crowd used the two brief breaks to shout a very laud "resignation."
Waters appeared on stage at 8:30 pm, but on a black raincoat with crossed hammers on it, and threw the first bricks at "The Wall."
There were fireworks, a laud thunder, and a plane crashing in "The Wall."
A little bit latter, 15 Bulgarian children performed with him "Another Brick in the Wall."
In the next hour, until "The Wall" came down, Waters released in the air above the audience an inflatable pig plastered with sickles, hammers, crescents, the Star of David, and US dollars alongside the logos of leading international corporations. The pig has stirred controversy and strong reaction in previous concerts.
During the song "Run Like Hell", Waters shouted: "Bulgaria, this is for you!"
At the end, "The Wall" came down in Sofia 36 years after Waters first sang the legendary song with "Pink Floyd."
The event delivered what promised and more – a spectacular show with magnificent special effects, bringing the audience several decades back and taking them into the future. It turned into an unforgettable evening for people who were part of it.
Roger Waters is known for his strong civil position.
While in Sofia, he visited the tomb of Major William Frank Thompson, a British officer who acted as a liaison officer between the British Army and the Bulgarian communist and antifascist partisans during World War II. The visit was advertised by the Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, in a special press release.
The screenplay writer of "The Wall," George Roger Waters (born September 6, 1943) is an English musician, singer, songwriter and composer. He was founder member of the progressive rock band Pink Floyd, serving as bassist and co-lead vocalist.
Bulgarians have been staging for nearly three months now protest rallies in Sofia, demanding the resignation of the Socialist-led government.
