A wildfire has engulfed an area of some 5000 acres near the town of Svilengrad in Southeastern Bulgaria, local media said early on Friday.

A total of 7 firetrucks have worked on extinguishing the fire throughout the night.

There is no risk for the nearby villages and no evacuation is necessary, according the Bulgarian National Radio.

The fire is located between the villages of Studena and Ravna gora - and authorities say it continues spreading.

The rough terrain prompted the use of a military helicopter, as authorities attempted to extinguish the fire on Thursday.

Firefighters, forest rangers, border police officers and volunteers have taken part in the operation.

The fire started in an almond forest near Studena.
