FOREIGNERS WILL COUNSEL BULGARIAN CUSTOMS

A council made of foreign experts will assist in the reforms of the Bulgarian customs, Emil Dimitrov, Head of the Customs Agency with the Ministry of Finance said. The prerogatives of the council are still to be specified. Dimitrov said he has already met with French, German and British customs and police officials. According to him the council may be established within the framework of an EU-financed programme. It will have foreign experts as members, whose expertise will be used in the combat against customs graft and corruption. The minister of finance Milen Velchev stressed that he would like to have include Morris Campbell, former official of the British customs and excise authority, as member of the council. Campbell served as customs adviser at the Bulgarian ministry of finance between 1999 and March 2001.
