Bulgarians have started gathering for an anti-graft rally in the capital Sofia, as Sunday marks the 45th day of mass protests in EU’s poorest member state.

Reporters said several hundred people had gathered at Sofia’s Nezavisimost (Independence) square around 7 pm EET – but more protesters were expected to arrive before 8 pm, when the rally traditionally heads towards Parliament.

The demonstration has been once again peaceful, with no accidents reported so far.

The only clashes occurred on Tuesday, when riot police cracked down on protesters in front of Parliament. Several people were injured back then.

Protesters have demanded that the Socialist-led government resign immediately over a string of controversial appointments and wider concerns about corruption.

The Bulgarian  Socialist Party held its traditional meeting at Mount Buzludzha on Saturday, once again declaring that the government does not intend to resign.

BSP’s government is backed in Parliament by the liberal Movement for Rights and Freedoms and the ultranationalist Ataka (Attack).
