Vice President Margarita Popova has urged the Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party, GERB, to return to the Parliament, stressing that a rift is the last thing the country needs at the moment.

Commenting on the current situation in the country, she suggested that Bulgaria needed responsible authorities, a functioning Parliament, and active work for the prosperity of the state, rather than attempts to cover up corrupt models of government.

Popova, as cited by mediapool.bg, was adamant that center-right party GERB had to return to Parliament.

She suggested that the dialogue could be restored through common will.

"I would very much like to see the Prime Minister play a somewhat stronger role," she said, adding that she had already shared her opinion with Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski.

"It must be clearly demonstrated that he is uncomfortable with having political leaders, who are currently failing to prove unequivocally that they place the nation and the state before the party, act as his spokespersons. At the same time, he is an expert. He is the Prime Minister of all and he has a stronger voice as a matter of course," Popova stated.

She suggested that the protesters were united by the strive to exercise civic control aimed at preventing corrupt governmental practices and their strive for stability and progress.

Popova added that demonstrators' demands were born out of a deep concern that Bulgarians were capable of achieving more but they were restrained by concerns that they did not always see clever people at the helm.

"It is high time we put an end to stupidity, profanity, haughtiness and cowardice. Let us not push the clever and competent into the corner and read aloud empty declarations, but let us clear the way for skilled people who can lead the country along the path we chose 23 years ago, so that we can make Bulgaria the country we deserve," the Vice President stated.

She added that the President's Office was not the institution to decide when and how elections were to be held, nor who was to resign when.

Popova emphasized that these issues were decided by the executive branch, as well as by Parliament in its entirety.

Popova took part in the ceremony marking the 176th anniversary of the birth of Bulgarian national hero Vasil Levski, held in front of his monument in the Borisova Gradina Park in Sofia.
