Veselin Vuchkov, MP from the former ruling center-right party Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria, GERB, and ex-Deputy Interior Minister, has reiterated the plans of the formation to not attend parliament sittings unless they concern Election Code amendments or a date for new snap elections.

After the inaugural sitting of Bulgaria's 42nd National Assembly on May 21, Boyko Borisov, former Prime Minister and leader of GERB, declared that the party would boycott parliament sittings by non-attendance and refusal to register for voting until new early elections were scheduled.

"We shall return to the Parliament only in the case of Election Code amendments and a clear, fixed date for snap elections. We shall not attend today's sitting – the MPs are there only to notarize decisions made by a narrow circle," Vuchkov said on Wednesday, as cited by 24 Chasa daily.

Vuchkov argued that one of the two nominees to head Bulgaria's State Agency for National Security, DANS, had already been selected, which would become clear to the general public soon.

On July 16, the commission for intelligence oversight, held hearings of the two hopefuls for the senior post - current interim DANS head Vladimir Pisanchev and Nedyalko Nedyalkov, head of the "Classified Information" directorate at DANS.

"Even the election of the most respectable professional cannot quell suspicions. Incompatible activities such as intelligence and counter-intelligence have been merged," he stated, adding that the chaos surrounding the appointment of Delyan Peevski as DANS Chair had made people forget other problems which were bound to surface sooner or later.

Commenting on the recent amendments to the State Agency for National security Actr, Vuchkov emphasized that Bulgaria needed clearly delineated functions of state bodies as regards wiretapping.

"Bulgaria has two services in charge of wiretapping and tracking – one at DANS and one at the Interior Ministry. The one which was under the command of the Interior Ministry was spun off into a separate agency governed by the Prime Minister. However, the one at DANS remained there," he stated.

Vuchkov suggested that DANS had insufficient capacity to investigate a broad range of crimes.
