Australians Sing Bulgarian Folk Songs As Well As Locals

The Australian members of the "Gorani*" group sing Bulgarian folk songs more passionately than many Bulgarians. One is impressed by the expression on their faces as well as by the spirit with which they sing. It all started back in 1992 in Melbourne when the Bulgarian Bagryana Popova organized meetings devoted to the Bulgarian folk. The first goal of the group was to learn several Bulgarian folk songs and to perform them at the Bulgarian consulate in Sydney. In 1996 when a Georgian singer joins the group, "Gorani" starts performing Georgian songs also. Now, "Gorani" has nine members. A year ago a Bulgarian who immigrated to Australia in thge late 80s joined the group. Seven of the group members are in Bulgaria now. They already had one concert in Sofia and met Bulgarian folk groups. Members of these Bulgarian groups said they were impressed with the discipline and the spirit of the Australian. "We were welcomed with open arms. The responsive, traditional welcome in the villages was overwhelming," one of the members of the group said. Now, Gorani makes a tour in Bulgaria. On October 30 at 5.30 pm, they will sing at national library "St.St. Cyril and Methodius" when the 60th anniversary of the Bulgarian writer will be celebrated. On October 31st, they will sing in Sofia library on square Slaveykov at 6pm when a book of Spas Sotirov will be presented.

*Gora in Bulgarian means forest, it also means mountain in old Bulgarian. In Georgian, Gora means mountain. Thus, Gorani could be translated as mountain people.
