Bulgaria: Afternoon Voter Turnout in Run-Off Election for Varna Mayor at 18.7% Photo by BGNES

Voter turnout in the run-off election for Mayor of the Bulgarian Black Sea city of Varna reached 18.7% by 5.30 pm on Sunday, meaning that a total of 54 498 had gone to the polls.

Voter turnout increased by 0.35% compared to 5.30 pm on June 30, when the first round of the mayoral election was held, according to reports of Sega daily.

The first round of the mayoral race registered a voter turnout of 25.68%, meaning that some 74 000 residents of Varna cast ballots out of a total of 290 000 people entitled to vote.

Sunday's run-off pits Hristo Bozov, a nominee of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), and Ivan Portnih, a candidate backed by center-right party Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB).

On June 30, Bozov came in first with 30%, followed by Portnih with 26.89%.

Polls close at 8 pm.
