Bulgarian MEP: After US Sanctions EU May Well Suspend Funds for Bulgaria

Justice Minister Zinaida Zlatanova has argued that Bulgaria is certain to lose EU funds during the next programming period.
In a Sunday interview for the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR), she suggested that the country was likely to lose EUR 200 – 500 M during the 2014-2020 programming period because the government had emphasized other priority spheres, including over the past six months.
"I would like to ask the members of the previous government to stop this media race about who will lose more money and who negotiated worse conditions under the financial framework for Bulgaria. If the colleagues from the previous government keep up the race, I think they are very likely to win," she noted.
Zlatanova insisted that the exchange of accusations was counterproductive for the state and was not what the citizens wanted.
"The financial framework has been negotiated and it is our goal to make better programs in the years to come," she stated.
Zlatanova announced that a comprehensive survey among beneficiaries during the current programming period would be launched next week to find ways to simplify application procedures.
She explained that the aim was to ask as many beneficiaries as possible about the difficulties they had encountered during the ongoing programming period in order to introduce substantially simplified, yet secure and efficient application procedures.
Asked to specify when she would appoint a Deputy Justice Minister, she said that the vacancy would be filled when the right candidate showed up, adding that quality was not to be sacrificed to speed.
