Local politician Yanko Stanev is reported to have been detained for vote buying in Bulgaria's third-largest city Varna Saturday, just one day ahead of the runoff in early mayor elections in the city.
According to reports, published by BGNES, TV7 and local media outlets, Stanev has been detained with accomplices, the reported number of whom range from one to ten.
The group allegedly pressured residents of the Varna Asparuhovo, Kamenar, Maksuda and Vladislavovo districts to vote for one of the candidates.
There is yet no official confirmation on the part of police authorities regarding the arrest.
Stanev has a locally well known and controversial political career in Varna, recalls Dnevnik.bg.
In the past, he was the chair of the local organization of righitsts Union of Democratic Forces, then transferring to the liberal Movement for Rights and Freedoms.
He was dismissed from both parties, due to alleged unprincipled and self-serving actions.
Later he served as town councillor in the Varna city hall and is reputed to be close to longtime mayor Kiril Yordanov, whose resignation in March due to popular discontent led to snap elections in the city.
Hristo Bozov, who got the most votes at the first round, last served as vice-mayor under Dobrev.
