Bulgarian Protesters Request President's Resignation

Scores of Bulgarians have assembled in a pro-government rally in front of the National Palace of Culture in capital Sofia.

The rally is part of a weekly and comparatively low-profile response to massive anti-government protests that Saturday are entering their 23rd consecutive day.

Participants at the pro-government rally argued that PM Plamen Oresharski and his cabinet must be given a chance, and that new snap elections will throw Bulgaria into chaos.

Some of them also saw the new government, backed by the Bulgarian Socialist Party, as a chance for more socially sensitive policies.

Saturday protesters also requested the resignation of Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev, startinga petition to that effect.

Friday Plevneliev issued an address to the nation, backing anti-government protests and describing new early elections as the only solution for the current political crisis.

This statement was interpreted by representatives of the Socialists and by others as divisive and not living up to the president's mission to embody the unity of the nation.
