Bulgarian Socialist Party leader Sergey Stanishev was lying when he told people he would revive the Belene nuclear power plant project, according to former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.

“I told you already when the referendum was taking place that Sergey Stanishev would not sign the project for the construction of Belene. They were lying in order to improve their image and mislead those who believed they would build Belene,” Borisov said Thursday, referring to the referendum on the fate of Belene that was held in January.

He reminded that the referendum, which was initiated by the Socialists, cost a total of BGN 13 M.

“We have never said we have enough money to build Belene,” the former PM told reporters.
On Monday, Bulgaria’s new Economy and Energy Minister Dragomir Stoynev admitted that the country currently cannot afford to construct the nuclear power plant.

Stoynev’s Bulgarian Socialist Party has been a fervent proponent of the Bulgarian-Russian nuclear project over the past years.

The more Western-oriented center-right government of Boyko Borisov (2009-2013) decided to abandon the project back in March 2012.
