Bulgaria's new Interior Minister, Tsvetelin Yovchev, has suggested that both the country and the Interior Ministry are in a state of crisis.
"I am fully aware of the great responsibility and the tough task I am facing," Yovchev stated after the oath-taking ceremony on Wednesday.
"In order to put an end to the state of crisis, we need to implement substantial reforms. Each month or year of delay of these reforms may result in main activities or the system as a whole losing their functionality," he noted, as cited by the Focus news agency.
Yovchev explained that the Interior Ministry had to boost the efficiency of the fight against crime, focusing on two main spheres, household crime and financial crimes such as smuggling, VAT fraud, excise duty evasion, etc.
He went on to argue that the Interior Ministry had to streamline the management, distribution, and spending of resources because it was achieving weak results with "patently insufficient resources."
Commenting on the proposal to spin off the Chief Directorate "Combating Organized Crime" (GDBOP) from the Interior Ministry and merge it into the system of the State Agency for National Security (DANS), Yovchev argued that the step would not place a burden on the Interior and the entities would maintain good cooperation.
Yovchev suggested that his actions would reveal whose interests he was defending.
Bulgaria's new government headed by Prime Minister Oresharski took an oath of office on Wednesday.
