EU Urges Bulgaria to Speed Up Funds Absorption, Improve Judiciary

Bulgaria should improve its business environment, accelerate the absorption of EU funds and improve the quality and independence of its judicial system, according to the European Commission.

The Commission has also called upon Bulgaria to preserve a sound fiscal position by ensuring compliance with the medium-term objective and pursue a growth-friendly fiscal policy as envisaged in the convergence program.

The Balkan country should trengthen the independence of national regulatory authorities and the administrative capacity in particular in the energy and transport sectors, as well as for waste and water management, according to the Commission.

Bulgaria has also been urged to phase out early retirement options, introduce the same statutory retirement age for men and women and implement active labor market policies that enable older workers to stay longer in the labor market.

On Wednesday, the Commission published the country-specific recommendations for each Member State, along with an overarching communication on what is needed to return to growth and jobs.

The recommendations are based on a thorough assessment of every Member State's plans for sound public finances (Stability or Convergence Programmes, or SCPs) and policy measures to boost growth and jobs (National Reform Programmes, or NRPs).
The Commission’s full recommendation for Bulgaria can be seen HERE.
