Daniel Mitov Ready for Foreign Minister Role Amid Geopolitical Test in Bulgaria
Daniel Mitov, Deputy Chairman of GERB, has expressed his readiness to assume the position of Acting Foreign Minister
Lyutvi Mestan, leader of Bulgarian liberal party Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS), has declared that his party would not allow the center-right GERB of former PM Boyko Borisov to return to power.
Mestan told reporters on Friday that the majority of Bulgarian voters cast their ballots against GERB in last week’s general election.
The results of the vote have shown that GERB cannot legitimately seek the formation of a new government, he said before meeting with President Rosen Plevneliev.
The leader of the predominantly ethnic Turkish liberal party said he would propose that the Parliament be convened on Tuesday, May 21.
“Bulgaria needs a quick formation of a new legitimate government – and that process cannot be launched without the convening of the National Assembly,” he pointed out.
GERB gathered 30.503% of the votes in Sunday's general elections, final results show.
Left-wing BSP is next with 26.614%, followed by DPS with 11.293% and the far-right,nationalist Ataka - 7.302%. All other parties running in Sunday's vote have remained below the 4% election threshold.
According to the final official count – GERB + Ataka will have together 120 seats and DPS + BSP – another 120 in the 240-seats unicameral Parliament.
The number of MP seats each of the four parties have won are as follows – 97 for GERB, 84 for BSP, 36 for DPS, and 23 for Ataka.
