"We Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria" Coalition Confirms Participation in Consecutive Elections
This marks the third consecutive election in which "We Continue the Change" and "Democratic Bulgaria" have joined forces
The formerly-ruling centrist Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party, GERB, plans to accept the mandate for appointing a new government and table a minority cabinet in parliament, according to media reports.
The line-up will be headed by former Prime Minister and party leader Boyko Borisov, but will not include the discredited former Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov, even though he is considered Borisov’s closest aide, Bulgarian Standard daily reported, citing an unnamed insiders.
Instead of joining the government, Tsvetanov has been tipped GERB parliamentary group head, according to the report.
The Prosecutor's Office however has already vowed to ask for stripping the immunity of former Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, after the latter takes the oath of office as Member of the Parliament.
Bulgaria's former Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov, who was currently GERB's election campaign manager, faces charges of failing to exercise proper control over the use of special surveillance devices during his term in office.
GERB's proposal for a government line-up is highly likely to be rejected by the other formations in the country's 42nd General Assembly.
On Monday, GERB's Deputy Chairman and former Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, announced his party - the party of former Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, was ready with nominations for a new government.
It is believed the proposal will include the highest rated Ministers from the former Borisov Cabinet – of Regional Development, Lilyana Pavlova, of Management of EU Funds, Tomislav Donchev, of Energy and Economy, Delyan Dobrev, while the former Deputy Finance Minister, Vladislav Goranov, will, most likely, take over the State budget.
The report surfaced on Thursday, a day after the Central Electoral Commission, CEC, processed 100% of the ballot protocols from the country and 100% of those from abroad and calculated the MP mandates for each of the four parties, which passed the 4% threshold.
Results from the May 12 early general elections show that four Bulgarian parties made their way to Bulgaria's Parliament.
They are: the center-right Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria, GERB, party of former Bulgarian Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, the Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, the ethnic Turkish party Movement for Rights and Freedoms, DPS, and their self-proclaimed arch enemies - the far-right nationalist Ataka (Attack).
According to the final CEC count – GERB + Ataka will have together 120 seats and DPS + BSP – another 120 in the 240-seats unicameral Parliament.
GERB has 30.50% of the vote, BSP – 26.61%, DPS – 11.29%, and Ataka – 7.30%.
The number of MP seats each of the four parties have won are as follows – 97 for GERB, 84 for BSP, 36 for DPS, and 23 for Ataka.
Former prime minister and GERB leader Boyko Borisov resigned in February following protests over poverty and alleged corruption.
