Bulgarian politicians and parties must show responsibility and form an able new cabinet, commented EU Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva.

Georgieva spoke Tuesday in Brussels, commenting on Sunday's early general election in Bulgaria, a first comment on events in her home country for a long time.

"I hope that those will be the last elections in which expected turnout drops during the campaign," said the Bulgarian EU Commissioner, as quoted by the Bulgarian News Agency.

"We all bear responsibility for the future of our country. We can see that it is now a very hard time to form a new government," stated Georgieva.

"Let us hope, that the sobering up after the elections will lead to a responsible decision," added she.

Georgieva added that the European Commission is following closely the developments in the investigation of election violation signals in Bulgaria.

Among the events that marred the election campaign in Bulgaria was a wiretapping scandal, during which it emerged that the EU Commissioner might have been one of the persons to have been illegally snooped upon by Bulgarian police.
