Daniel Mitov Ready for Foreign Minister Role Amid Geopolitical Test in Bulgaria
Daniel Mitov, Deputy Chairman of GERB, has expressed his readiness to assume the position of Acting Foreign Minister
The center-right GERB party of former Bulgarian Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, won by a 2.8% margin most votes in Bulgaria's general elections, tallying 30.5 % against the Socialists with 27.7%, according to an exit poll of the Mediana polling agency.
Four Bulgarian parties will certainly make their way to Bulgaria's 42nd General Assembly, according to the exit poll.
In addition to the Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party, GERB and the Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, the others are - the ethnic Turkish party Movement for Rights and Freedoms, DPS, with 10.7% and their self-proclaimed archenemies the far-right nationalist Ataka (Attack) – 7.8%.
Stunningly for many, according to exit polls, none of the oldest "hardline" right-wing formations are going to be in the next Parliament, though one formations is close and might have a chance after all ballots are counted officially.
From the right-wing parties, which are credited with throwing out the ex-communists who had pushed the country to the brink of financial crisis in the 90s, only Democrats for Strong Bulgaria, DSB, of former Prime Minister Ivan Kostov could enter the 42nd General Assembly with 3.8%.
The right-wing Bulgaria for Citizens of former EU Commissioner, Meglena Kuneva is said to be close to the 4% threshold with 3.7%.
According to this poll, GERB party won about 96 seats; the Socialist Party will capture as many as 87 MPs in Bulgaria's 240-seat unicameral parliament.
Another 33 seats are expected to go to the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms, DPS.
The nationalist Ataka party ranked fourth, capitalizing on anger at corruption and poor living standards and has tapped on ethnic debate. It is expected to secure 24 MP seats.
The Head of the Mediana agency, Kolio Kolev, points out that according to these results BSP + DPS have 120 seats and GERB + Ataka – also 120, meaning Ataka will be the mediator in forming the next Cabinet.
