Bulgaria’s President Rosen Plevneliev has called upon Bulgarians to vote in the country's parliamentary elections on May 12.

"No matter what mud-slinging appear in the last days of the pre-election campaign, this won’t change the agenda of the people. Therefore I want to appeal to the Bulgarian citizens "Please vote!,” said the president in a special statement.

"Vote as your conscience tells you, vote for whomever you choose, but please cast your vote.”

The center-right government of former PM Boyko Borisov resigned amid massive anti-poverty protests in February, prompting President Rosen Plevneliev to adjourn the Parliament, appoint a caretaker Cabinet and schedule snap elections for May 12.

Parties need to overcome a threshold of at least 4% of the votes to gain seats in parliament.
