A roadside bomb has killed five US soldiers serving as part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in southern Afghanistan.

According to reports of the BBC News, citing a media statement of the ISAF, Saturday's bomb was an "improvised explosive device".

About 100 000 soldiers from more than 48 countries are still serving with the NATO-led security mission in Afghanistan, the US being the biggest contributor to ISAF.

The ISAF force is to end its mission by end-2014.

A total of 47 ISAF members have been killed in Afghanistan since the beginning of 2013, 37 of them American.

The Taliban launched their annual spate of attacks targeting foreign military bases and diplomatic areas on Sunday.

On April 30, three British soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb in the southern province of Helmand.
