The coalition between the former king's party, widely considered a marginal liberal party, and the ethnic Turkish 'dissidents' may spring the biggest surprise in the upcoming elections, pollsters say.

“The coalition between Kasim Dal’s party and NDSV may prove to be the biggest surprise at the upcoming elections,” Mihail Mirchev, Professor of Economic Sociology, Head of Agency "ASSA-M" and president of the Association of Sociologists, argues.

Polling agencies have forecast that the coalition may garner between 2 and 4% of the votes in the elections on May 12 and stands a real chance to fight for seats in parliament.

"The real change will come from small and medium-sized parties," said Professor Mirchev.

According to him the ongoing scandals involving the bigger parties only repel voters and make them turn to runners in the periphery of the political spectrum.

The National Movement for Stability and Prosperity and the National Party Freedom and Dignity became on March 30 the first coalition to register for the early elections in May.

NMSP was part of the so-called three-way coalition (2005-2009). The party failed to enter the Bulgarian Parliament after the 2009 general elections.

Kasim Dal, the self-proclaimed top "dissident" from the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms party, DPS, and Korman Ismailov, a former head of the youth organization of DPS, founded in December 2012, new party – National Party Freedom and Dignity, NPSD.

"More than a year ago we said we will be looking for coalition allies because of the difficult situation Bulgaria is now," Hristina Hristova, leader of the liberals, said.

Korman Ismailov, leader of NPSD, tops the coalition's ticket in the town of Kardzhali, where the population is predominantly ethnic Turks.
