The Bulgarian Socialist Party gathered some 30 000 supporters on a Labor Day rally in the capital Sofia on Wednesday, May 1.

Expectedly, BSP leader Sergey Stanishev took the opportunity to engage in political campaigning ahead of the May 12 general elections.

“We have gathered here to celebrate May 1, but also to express our anger – everybody’s anger – at what has been going on over the last four years,” Stanishev declared during his speech.

Labor has never been so humiliating in Bulgaria, and I have never seen so many desperate people,” he said.

He reminded that the center-right GERB party, whose Cabinet resigned in February amid massive anti-poverty protests, promised justice, order and social care at the beginning of its term four years ago.

“How do we call people who do not keep their promises? Liars!” the Socialist leader said.
Stanishev vowed to “sweep GERB away from power once and forever.”

He described GERB’s rule as based on “fear, repression and wiretapping.”

The center-right GERB government of PM Boyko Borisov resigned amid massive protests against corruption and poverty in February, prompting President Rosen Plevneliev to adjourn the Parliament, appoint a caretaker Cabinet and schedule snap elections for May 12.
GERB has a slight edge over the opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party, according to polls.
