Agriculture Minister Ivan Stankov has made clear that Bulgaria's caretaker government will not interfere in the food market during the Easter holidays.

In a Friday interview for the Bulgarian National Television (BNT) Stankov said that there would be no special discounts of lamb and eggs, adding that the prices of these products were traditionally lower on the eve of Easter.

He noted that the Ministry of Agriculture and Food would not interfere in the relations between producers and retail chains.

Stankov drew attention to the fact that Bulgaria's domestic output was very low, with imported meat products amounting to around 50-60% of the total, while imported fruit and vegetables accounted for over 80% of the total.

Bulgaria's caretaker Agriculture Minister stressed that Bulgaria had to boost the share of domestic production.

He argued that the caretaker government had already managed to defend Bulgarian priorities at the sitting of the EU Council of Ministers.

Stankov suggested that Bulgaria had succeeded to declare new priorities besides grain production which would be included in the Common Agricultural Policy.

"These are livestock breeding, the production of fruit and vegetables, organic farming, mountain farming, small farms, young farmers – these are the new priorities on the basis of which we are developing Bulgaria's new agricultural policy and the new strategies," Stankov added.

Stankov assured that Bulgaria would succeed in defending domestic production, adding that the caretaker government was taking steps to achieve this.
