Lyutvi Mestan, leader of Bulgarian ethnic Turkish party Movement for Rights and Freedoms, has called upon former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov to dismiss Tsvetan Tsvetanov, a key official of his center-right GERB party.

Mestan stated that Borisov would prove that he is highly dependent on Tsvetanov, a controversial former Interior Minister, if he does not get rid of him.

The ethnic Turkish leader’s statement follows a shocking revelation made by former Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naydenov earlier on Thursday.

Naydenov declared that Tsvetan Tsvetanov had been illegally snooping around and eavesdropping on all members of the GERB Cabinet, along with President Rosen Plevneliev, possibly former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, and many other senior officials.

The former Minister accused Tsvetanov of spying in order to blackmail everyone and eliminate all who would get closer to Borisov.

Lyutvi Mestan stated on Thursday that it was a widely-known fact that illegal wiretapping existed while Tsvetanov was in office. However, he described the fact that Naydenov – a man close to Borisov – spoke about it, as an important development.

Mestan described Tsvetanov as “the ugly political face” of GERB and urged the party to drop him as its campaign manager for the upcoming snap elections in May.

The center-right government of former PM Boyko Borisov resigned amid massive anti-poverty protests in February, prompting President Rosen Plevneliev to adjourn the Parliament, appoint a caretaker Cabinet and schedule snap elections for May 12. GERB has a slight edge over the opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party, according to polls.

Tsvetanov has been entangled in a large-scale wiretapping scandal over the past few weeks.
