Kalin Georgiev, Chief Secretary of Bulgaria's Interior Ministry, has declared that he would not file his resignation over the ongoing wiretapping scandal in the country.

Georgiev has told bTV that a resignation would mean that he is taking the blame for the actions of the Interior Ministry officials who are currently investigated over the scandal.

The scandal broke out at the end of March, when Sergey Stanishev, leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), submitted a tipoff to Chief Prosecutor, Sotir Tsatsarov, about illegal wiretapping of politicians, businessmen and magistrates which had taken place during former Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov's term in office.

Last week, in reporting the results from the probe, Tsatsarov stated that two thirds of Stanishev's information has been confirmed. Tsatsarov also explained that important information related to the case had been deleted in a bid to sabotage the probe, adding the prosecutors would try to recover the lost data.

The Sofia City Prosecutor's Office has now pressed charges against three former directors of the Specialized Directorate Technical Operations of the Interior Ministry, Sergey Katsarov, Kamen Kostov and Tsvetan Ivanov, and one employee of the unit for “failure to perform official duties which had serious consequences.”
