Bulgaria's government considers initiating a new price freeze of staple foods for the Easter holidays, according to Asen Vasilev and Ivan Stankov, caretaker Ministers of Economy and Agriculture, respectively.

The proposal was put forth Saturday at the opening of the Agroproducts Expo 2013 in the southern city of Plovdiv, according to reports of dnevnik.bg.

Agroproducts Expo 2013 was presented as the first of its kind meeting and expo organized in support of small and medium-sized Bulgarian businesses.

At the opening of the expo, Stankov told journalists that the caretaker government would try to keep prices of staple food products unchanged during the Easter holidays, adding that prices of eggs and lamb had even dropped recently.

Stankov and Vasilev made clear that the caretaker government would hold talks with representatives of the major retail chains on the price freeze.

Stressing that the Ministry of Economy, Energy and Tourism did not set prices of goods, Vasilev voiced hopes that producers and traders in Bulgaria would agree on the necessary steps to make sure that everybody would have nice Easter holidays.

In early August 2012, several large chains of stores agreed to freeze prices of staple foods for three months at the initiative of then-Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naydenov.

The price freeze was imposed on bread, milk, yogurt, cheese, butter, yellow cheese, poultry, pork, eggs and frankfurters made by Bulgarian producers.

Then the initiative was afterwards repeated during the Christmas holidays.
