US Recommends Recount of Venezuela Presidential Vote

World | April 17, 2013, Wednesday // 19:25

The USA are not prepared to recognize newly-elected Venezuela President Nicolas Maduro, stated US Secretary of State John Kerry.

"We think that there must be a recounting of votes," said Kerry Wednesday.

Sunday Maduro, the candidate supported by deceased President Hugo Chavez, won the presidential election in Venezuela by a mere 1.7% of the vote.

This sparked widespread protests among supporters of rightist rival Henrique Capriles, who said that he will not recognize results, seeing the vote as rigged.

The protests deteriorated in riots that have already claimed some lives, with both sides throwing the blame on the other.
