No fewer than 15 security guards on state payroll are protecting Bulgaria’s former Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov day and night, according to a local paper.

Tsvetanov, who is currently heading the election campaign headquarters of his center-right GERB party, is travelling across the country in the company of guards of the National Security Service.

The guards are performing thorough checks of each town square or conference hall that Tsvetanov is visiting, according to the Pressa daily.

It turned out last month that the former GERB government had passed a decision on March 4 to keep the National Security Service guards for Tsvetanov after he left the post of Interior Minister because his life was under threat.

The special protection was triggered by a total of over 20 threats to Tsvetanov’s life, according to Kalin Georgiev, Chief Secretary of the Interior Ministry.

The former Interior Minister is currently entangled in a wiretapping scandal.
