Bulgaria’s former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has attempted to frighten voters with the prospect of “former communists” returning to power.

Borisov, who made his first public appearance in several weeks at his center-right GERB’s national conference on Sunday, claimed that “no other party than GERB” could prevent the “former communists” from taking over the country.

Borisov, who resigned amid massive protests in February, pointed out that no dictator would voluntarily step down.

“The fact that we have order and discipline does not mean that we are a dictatorship,” he argued during his speech.

The former Prime Minister noted that GERB will return to power “if that is what people want.”
Borisov singled out “realism” as his party’s main political virtue and vowed not to increase taxes if it comes back in power.

Nearly 15 000 GERB members and supporters attended the party’s national conference in Sofia on Sunday.

Borisov and his GERB Cabinet resigned on February 21 amidst massive protest rallies against poverty, stagnation and political corruption. Snap general elections will be held on May 12, just two months ahead of the regularly scheduled date.
