Boyko Borisov, former Bulgarian PM and current leader of center-right GERB party, is expected to make his first public appearance for a long time now Sunday at GERB's pre-election national congress in Sofia.

The congress is scheduled for 1 pm at the Sofia Arena Armeets hall, and Borisov is expected to address his party ahead of the May 12 snap vote.

Sunday is also the third Sunday of the Orthodox Great Lent, celebrated by Orthodox Christians as the feast of Veneration of the Cross.

Bulgaria's former PM has barely made any public appearances since parliament accepted his resignation on February 21.

Borisov's giving in power in the wake of massive protests against stagnation in Bulgaria led to the dissolution of parliament and scheduling of early elections just months ahead of the regular July deadline.

Upon resigning, Borisov had commented that the people needs to have its voice heard at new elections, but was determined to win them again and regain the PM spot.

In the weeks after his resignation, Borisov was hospitalized a couple of times due to hypertension, apparently caused by stress.

Commentators have seen his avoidance of the spotlight as motivated by the desire to see protests tone down, before re-emerging.
