Will Bulgaria Have a Stable Government After Yet Another Election in June? Our Readers Have Spoken
On our Facebook page, readers were asked about Bulgaria's stability after the June elections
Rightist Bulgarian voters should cast their ballots at upcoming May 12 early elections is former ruling party GERB, according to former rightist Parliament Speaker Yordan Sokolov.
"There is no reasonable choice for rightists apart from GERB. This is the largest Bulgarian EPP member, and is the only alternative to the previous tri-partite coalition led by the Bulgarian Socialist Party," said Sokolov.
He spoke in an interview for TV7 commenting on the failure of so-called traditional "blue" rightists to broker an election coalition.
Sokolov was Speaker of the Bulgarian Parliament 1997-2001, when the Union of Democratic Forces he was a part of had majority, and UDF leader Ivan Kostov was Bulgaria's PM.
Soon after an election defeat in 2001, Kostov split from the Union, founding his own Democrats for Strong Bulgaria.
Both the UDF and DSB have registered for the May vote, but opinion polls show their chances to get into parliament are not too high.
What is more, this week it surfaced that Kostov has failed to even negotiate a coalition deal with key politicians who recently broke away from UDF, such as Nadezhda Neynsky and Martin Dimitrov.
"If a disappointed rightist were to ask me who to vote for in the face of this disunity, I would undoubtedly point to GERB," commented Sokolov.
"I think that GERB's rule will be remembered with good, in spite of significant criticism," added he.
The former Speaker of Parliament further said that he hopes that GERB gets a majority in order to be able to form a non-coalition cabinet, keeping the Socialist Party and the liberal Movement for Rights and Freedoms out of power.
