The economic hardships suffered by Bulgarians are largely due to "60 years of socialist rule", according to former Bulgarian Minister of Finance Simeon Djankov.

Djankov gave his unusual take on Bulgarian history as part of a defense of his policies as a FinMin and the work of the previous center-right GERB cabinet he was part of.

"Poverty in Bulgaria is terrifying because we started out at a very low level back in the day," commented the former minister.

"Then we had 60 years of socialist rule, but with a center-right government we will prosper. However, not all can be accomplished at once," mused Djankov.

Traditionally, the communist or socialist regime in Bulgaria is considered to have lasted 45 years, from the Bulgarian Communist Party coup on Septemer 9, 1944, to the deposition of party leader Todor Zhivkov on November 10, 1989.

Djankov might have been referring to the roughly 60 years between the official adoption of Bulgaria's first socialist constitution in 1947 and the coming to power of the GERB cabinet in 2009.

This would mean that he considers socialist cabinets such as those of rightists Filip Dimitrov and Ivan Kostov, and of centrist liberal and former tsar Simeon Saxe-Coburg.
