North Korea has asked foreign embassies based in Pyongyang to consider evacuating staff, according to Russia’s Foreign Minister.

“The proposal was made to all the embassies in Pyongyang, and we are now trying to shed light on the situation,” Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters, as cited by RIA Novosti.

Lavrov added that Russia was in close contact with the United States, China and South Korea over the unexpected announcement, which comes shortly after North Korea threatened to launch nuclear attacks on both the US mainland and American military bases in the region.

A crisis is escalating after Pyongyang threatened to wage nuclear war on the U.S. and South Korea.

North Korea is believed to have moved two medium-range missiles to its east coast.

The country’s latest missile deployment has prompted the US to move its THAAD advanced missile defense system along with radar systems to a base on the Pacific Ocean island of Guam.
