Bulgaria: Bulgaria's Wiretapping Scandal - Whose Mistake Was It This Time?

Was something lost in translation in Bulgaria's recent wiretapping scandal?

Pessimists have the lead in the poll on whether the truth will be revealed.

Pessimists ask if Stanishev checked the facts in the so-called Bulgarian Watergate scandal to which he drew public attention.

Or did he give too much credence to the allegations of a party comrade, a former Interior Minister?

One of the two options, Rumen Petkov, rejected being approached about the matter, the other options being Mihail Mikov, a former socialist Interior Minister.

Did Mikov decide to use the case to boost the image of the Bulgarian Socialist Party?

What if the evidence proves insufficient, who will be held to account?

Former Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov has vowed to quit politics if the Interior Ministry is found guilty of illegal wiretapping.

But what will the socialists do if their leader is proved wrong?

Leaving party concerns aside, the big question for Bulgaria is whether we shall have a stable government after the May 12 elections?

Bulgaria does not want to be cited as the worst case example in the EU.

We simply want to live in a well-functioning and truly European Bulgaria.
