Two Bulgarian women, aged 22 and 24, have been sentenced to 21 months in jail by an Irish court for robbing pensioners and blind people, local media reported.

Mariyana Petrova (22) and Veska Georgieva (24) from Bulgaria had embarked on a countrywide crime spree targeting the frail and elderly after arriving in Ireland in February, according to the Irish Independent.

During the trial at Dublin District Court, Petrova admitted 17 thefts, one attempted theft, one fraud offence and one criminal damage charge.

Georgieva was guilty of 18 thefts and two fraud offences.

Petrova and her accomplice pocketed EUR 220 from a wallet with a bank card in south Dublin, and four rings worth EUR 900 at Tommy Moore Jewellers on Camden Street, Dublin.

They also made off with clothing worth EUR 1,740, EUR 1,037 of sunglasses and EUR 450 of children's clothing from Brown Thomas in Dublin.

They travelled seeking out victims in Dublin, Limerick and Cork before they were caught by officers from the gardai's Operation Aughrim.

Gardai say the pair had amassed a fortune from striking all over Europe before arriving in Ireland.

Petrova had clocked up a string of convictions overseas, including three in the UK, one in Austria and three in her homeland. Her accomplice Georgieva was arrested in Italy last year and Germany in 2011.
