The Count of Monte Christo
Director: Kevin Reynolds (Waterworld, Rapa Nui, Prince of Thieves
Screenwriter: Jay Wolpert
Cast: Guy Pearce, James Caviezel, Richard Harris
Those familiar with the Alexandre Dumas story will remember that the plot focuses on the betrayal and long imprisonment of the The Count, his subsequent escape and eventual revenge on those who had mistreated him. Jay Wolpert's screenplay follows that general thread, though there are some interesting variations and he achieves some moments of engaging humour. Caviezel and Pearce are adequate in the lead roles and you get a sense of them hugely enjoying the fun. You will also enjoy it as The Count of Monte Christo is really nice family entertainment.
2001: A Space Travesty
Director: Allan Goldstein
Screenplay: Leslie Nielsen, Alan Shearman
Cast: Leslie Nielsen, Ophelie Winter
A spaced-out and funny parody of Stanley Kubrick's classic science fiction from 1968. Leslie Nielsen is cast in the role of the US Marshall Service "best" man, Marshall Richard "Dick" Dix. He is sent to investigate when reports come in through official channels that the US President is being held hostage on a secret international moon base called Vegan and has been replaced on Earth with a clone. Back in Washington, Dix unwittingly installs the clone in the White House and, as befuddled as ever, makes off with the real President. In an insane mкlйe Dix manages to expose the clone and, triumphantly, save the world from the evil aliens. Apart from some good laughs, and average special effects the film is said to be not as good as any of "The Naked Gun" movies. It also lacks the steamy sexual humor you might be accustomed to in other Leslie Nielsen comedy romps.
