DOBRUDJA WITH LOWER YIELD IN 2001

Business | August 20, 2001, Monday // 00:00

`Some 60% of the fields under maize in Dobrudja (North-eastern Bulgaria), known as Bulgaria`s breadbasket, will produce no harvest, while 25% will yield between 500 and 1,000 kg/ha`, Dimiter Katrandjiev, Chairman of the Union of Grain Farmers in Bulgaria, announced. `The wheat harvest is expected to reach 4 million tons, which will be enough to guarantee the country`s grain balance`, Deputy Agriculture Minister Boiko Boev specified. These yields allow an export of 700 000 t of wheat. So far 100 000 t have been exported. Up to now, 30% of the wheat has been harvested. `Instead of subsidiaries farmers in drought-hit Dobrudja want interest-free loans for sowing, which will pay back in two years in grain to the State Reserve`, Katrandiev said, adding that the government could help the region by providing fertilizers on credit, extending the deadline for payment of the Value Added Taxes and building irrigation facilities in the region.
