President: Strong Civil Society Rescued Bulgaria's Jews

The rescue of Bulgarian Jews in WW II is a testament to the strong civic spirit of Bulgarians, stated Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev.
Plevneliev spoke at a forum devoted to the EU in Vienna, just before heading back to Sofia to take part in the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the rescue Sunday.
"When politicians fail, citizens need to act out," said the Bulgarian President.
"The rescue of Bulgaria's Jews is proof of Bulgaria's thriving civil society," added Plevneliev.
Although an ally of Nazi Germany during the Second World war, Bulgaria eventually did not deport its Jews to the death camps.
This was due to the efforts of a number of MPs, members of the clergy, intellectuals, and ordinary Bulgarians, pitched against the intentions of a government that rather was disposed to fulfill Hitler's instructions.
