Bulgaria: No Changes to Bulgaria's Election Code despite Calls of Protesters Iskra Fidosova, GERB MP and Chair of the Parliamentary Legal Affairs Committee, photo by BGNES

The parliamentary group of center-right party GERB will not amend the Election Code despite the demands of protesters, according to Iskra Fidosova, GERB MP and Chair of the Parliamentary Legal Affairs Committee.

Fidosova, as cited by Presa daily, argued that there was no time to make election rules anew.

"Why do they want from us to work 24 hours a day, is this not dictatorship of the proletariat?" said Krasimir Velchev, head of the parliamentary group of GERB.

GERB MPs insist that there are more important tasks to solve before the dissolution of Parliament.

The center-right party is likely to organize meetings with protesters to explain to them why they cannot change the Election Code this week

Apart from GERB, the amendments are also opposed by the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms party (DPS), who say that last-minute changes to the Election Code would mean opening Pandora's Box.

Bulgaria's center-right GERB government resigned on February 20 amid mass protests over high electricity and heating bills and low incomes.

The protests turned into demonstrations calling for a change of the political model, increased civic participation in government, elimination of corruption, abolition of monopolies, etc.
